Does Toothpaste Get Rid of Pimples

Using toothpaste to get rid of pimples has been an urban legend for years. No one quite knows how the idea got started but one thing is for sure, it isn’t guaranteed to work and isn’t very safe for your skin. So how did this urban legend become so well known if it doesn’t really work? Mostly because toothpastes in recent years have been made with baking soda and other chemicals that help to dry out acne. It doesn’t, however, guarantee that this method will work for you and chances are you’ll simply injure your skin more since toothpaste has chemicals that can burn the skin or that the skin outside of your mouth is allergic to. Plus, toothpaste for acne can increase redness and peeling, making a zit worse long before it makes it better. This is especially true if you use a toothpaste that has flavoring such as mint.

However, while the method isn’t recommended for regular outbreaks, if you’re in a bit of a bind and all you have on hand is some toothpaste with baking soda (this is really the only kind that works), go ahead and use these tips to apply it properly:

  1. Try to avoid using your hands if you can, but if you must then make sure they’re clean. If they aren’t all you’ll do is spread the bacteria from the one pimple around your face and cause others.
  2. Wash your face as well, if you can. Even if all you use is soap and water it’s better than letting dirt and bacteria sit on your face when you’re trying to clear up a pimple.
  3. Apply the toothpaste directly to the pimple and the immediate area. Don’t spread it around your face. If you have a reaction the last thing you want is your whole face turning red!
  4. Let the toothpaste sit on the pimple for as long as possible, unless it begins to burn. If you start to feel your skin burning remove it as quickly and carefully as possible.
  5. Once you’re ready to remove the toothpaste, wet it and gently wash it away. Try not to disturb the pimple too much and definitely refrain from popping it. Popping a pimple just causes more problems such as scarring.

In general the best way to get rid of pimples is through methods other than toothpaste such:

  • Making a paste of baking soda and water and applying it directly to a pimple to help dry it out.
  • Using an ice cube to help reduce inflammation and take out redness if the pimple has popped.
  • If it hasn’t come to a head, encourage it to do so with a warm compress.
  • Try using some tea tree oil on the pimple once it comes to a head. Tea tree oil is an astringent and is antibacterial and helps to clean out pimples fast.
  • Having a pimple doesn’t have to be an ‘end of the world’ experience! Use these simple tricks and you can clear it up without any trouble.
