Get Rid of Diaper Rash Naturally

Diaper rash is a type of dermatitis or skin inflammation often caused by bacteria breeding and thriving in the warm, moist environment of a diaper. A diaper is the ideal place for bacteria to breed and thrive and when the weather becomes humid and hot, or if your child has skin allergies, or the diaper isn’t being changed quite enough, your baby can suffer from diaper rash!

How do I know if my baby has diaper rash?

  • Red skin in the diaper region
  • Puffy skin in the diaper region
  • Tender skin in the diaper region
  • Changes in disposition especially during diaper changes

Call a doctor if:

  • The rash is severe
  • It worsens
  • You see blisters or boils
  • The rash moves out of the diaper area
  • You see pus or other discharge
  • There is a fever
  • Your baby is unusually sleepy

How do I prevent diaper rash?

  • Let your baby go diaper-less as often as possible.
  • Change your baby’s diaper as often as possible.
  • Avoid commercial baby wipes and stick to just mild soap and a washcloth.
  • Dry your baby’s bottom before putting on a new diaper.
  • Use a diaper-rash cream even if there is NO rash.
  • Use baby-skin friendly products only to help prevent skin irritation.
  • Avoid the powders like baby powder or corn starch.
  • If you are using washable diapers hang them on the line and wash with a cup of vinegar.

How can I treat diaper rash?

  • Try a gentle baking soda sitz bath. 2 tablespoons of water in a tub of warm water for 10 minutes, three times a day.
  • Add some oatmeal to the baby’s bath to help sooth and protect the skin.
  • A vinegar rinse is a great option for wiping down and neutralizing the rash. 1 part vinegar to 8 parts water, or one tablespoon vinegar to 8 tablespoons water.
  • Give your baby a little cranberry juice if they’re older. It helps bacteria get washed away and neutralized.
  • Make a chamomile bath; steep some tea bags in the water to help soothe the skin.
  • Coconut oil is a great way to soothe the skin and clear up an infection.
