Get Rid of Drowsiness Naturally

Drowsiness hits even the best of us often at the worst of times. It can strike in those hours between lunch and when we get to go home from work, or in the car as we drive back to our home from a long graveyard shift. Drowsiness can be normal or it can be caused by sleep-wake disorders such as sleep apnea, insomnia or narcolepsy. It is also a side-effect of certain diseases such as diabetes and heart disease.

If you have problems with your circadian rhythms it is also common to suffer from sleep disorders and feel drowsy and fatigued throughout the day. Additionally, it is also common for people who have suffered the death of a loved one, those suffering from depression and those under-going a stressful period of their life to have trouble sleeping well and therefore suffer from drowsiness and fatigue.

It is important to note that if you or a loved one has suffered a severe head injury such as a concussion and begin to feel unnaturally drowsy you should seek medical attention immediately. This can be a symptom of serious, life-threatening conditions. Seek medical care immediately by calling emergency services.

How do I prevent Drowsiness?

  • Get 30 minutes of natural sunlight a day to help regulate your normal sleep cycle.
  • Exercise regularly for 30 minutes but at least three hours before you sleep. You’ll find yourself more energetic on a regular basis.
  • Get at least 8 hours of sleep a night.
  • Take vitamin C to help keep yourself healthy and awake.

  • Every now and then look away from your computer screen. Eye fatigue can lead to sleepiness.
  • Eat a snack that helps to boost and sustain your blood sugar. Peanut butter, yogurt, nuts and fruit are all great options.
  • Start a conversation with someone to wake up your mind. That will help to ward off the need for sleep.
  • Turn up the lights. Bright lights help to ward off fatigue.
  • Do some deep breathing exercises. They engage your body and help to boost the oxygen levels to your brain and body.
  • If you’re doing a monotonous task go ahead and change what you’re doing. Changing tasks will help to re-engage your brain and wake it back up.
  • Drink water.
  • Splash your face with cold water.
  • Have a cup of tea with honey, cinnamon and ginger. It will naturally boost your energy.
  • Use rosemary and basil oil to naturally energize yourself through the air.
  • Vigorously massage your body for 10 minutes to help get your blood moving again.
