Known as striae, stretch marks are unsightly streaks in the skin that show places where rapid growth or loss has occurred in the body. Often seen in women, especially before and after pregnancy, stretch marks can be found in anyone but are most common in those who have gained or lost large amounts of weight causing the skin to have to catch up to the loss or gain of fat in the body. Once they turn white or silver stretch marks are nearly impossible to get rid of, so prevention is key, as is treatment of them when they are in the colored stages.

 

How do I know if I have stretch marks?

  • Stretch marks begin as pink, purple or red streaks in the skin.
  • Some may be indented.
  • They will fade and become white or silver in color
  • They are most often seen on the arms, back, breasts, buttocks and abdomen.

  • Keep your stress levels low.
  • Exercise regularly to keep your body firm and toned.
  • Do some yoga.
  • Keep your skin moisturized.
  • Stay hydrated!

 

How can I treat stretch marks?

  • Potato juice helps to foster grown and restoration of skin cells. Rub raw potato over your stretch marks, let dry, then gently wash away with warm water.
  • Gently exfoliate with a sugar scrub made from raw sugar, almond oil and a little lemon juice. Rub on 10 minutes before a shower then rinse away.
  • Aloe vera gel helps to heal a number of skin problems. Rub directly on affected skin.
  • Keep your body well hydrated!
  • Try to keep yourself at a steady, healthy weight.
  • Massage vitamin E oil into your stretch marks; olive and almond oils will also work.
  • Apply a mix of lavender oil with chamomile oil mixed in a little olive oil to stretch marks to lighten them.
