Get Rid of Mastitis Naturally

Mastitis, an infection that causes inflammation of the breast or breasts, commonly affects nursing women but can affect anyone. It leaves the new mother feeling tired and worn down, more so than the new baby, and often leads to women giving up on breast-feeding.

 

How do I know if I have mastitis?

  • Breast tenderness
  • Breasts that are overly warm to the touch
  • Swelling of the breasts
  • Pain or burning sensations continuously or while feeding
  • Redness in a wedge shaped pattern
  • Fever

 

How do I prevent mastitis?

  • Switch sides often
  • Nurse thoroughly
  • Don’t go long between feedings

How can I treat mastitis?

  • Get into bed, pull your baby’s bed up next to yours and rest.
  • Continue breast-feeding. This helps to clear up the infection.
  • Use a cold compress to help decrease inflammation.
  • Make a rosemary, fenugreek or dandelion poultice. They help to bring the infection out.
  • Massage the breast that is infected towards the nipple as you nurse.
  • Eat garlic! It helps to eliminate bacterial infections naturally. Up to 5 cloves a day if you can manage it.
  • Take a warm shower and let the water just run over your breasts.
  • Poke root has been shown to have antibiotic properties and helps to stimulate the lymph system.
  • Echinacea is an immune system booster which is a definite plus for breast feeding women.
