Our eyes water naturally to keep our eyes lubricated and free of debris. Sometimes, however, our tears can well up and becoming overwhelming. Also known as epiphora, increased watering is caused by either more production of tears or inability to drain tears effectively. It can be caused by everything from allergies to injuries and in some cases may be caused by problems with the eyelid turning inwards. Infants under one year and those over the age of sixty are most likely to suffer from epiphora or watering eyes.

  • Prevent your eyes from damage such as sun burn and injury by wearing protective lenses.
  • Stay away from allergens or things that cause allergic reactions.
  • Don’t rub and touch your eyes when they are itchy and irritated.
  • Avoid people with infections and wash your hands before touching your eyes if you’ve been near people with infections.
  • Wash your hands before touching your eyes.

 

How can I treat watering eyes?

  • Use a warm, damp compress several times a day to help clear up a blocked tear duct.
  • If your eyes are burned, wash gently with cool water to soothe the burn.
  • Make an eye drop of honey and rose water to help clear out bacteria and soothe the eyes.
  • Make eye drops of aloe vera and rose milk to help with burning and stinging eyes.
  • Cover your eyes with frozen metal spoons. They will soothe itching, burning and stinging instantly.
  • Try a cucumber slice on each eye to soothe and cool the eyes.
  • Practice good eye health care by seeing an eye doctor regularly.
  • Enjoy foods high in beta carotene which is essential for eye health.
