Cracked heels, also known as heel fissures, are often assumed to be a sign of poor hygiene and bad foot care but that is not always the case. It is a common problem affecting both men and women, especially the elderly, those overweight, and those that stand on their feet for long periods of time. It will worsen during winter months and in dry climates. Be sure you treat dry heels as soon as you notice them in order to prevent getting cracked heels.

How do I prevent cracked heels?

  • Soak your feet in a warm bath twice a week
  • Gently exfoliate off the dead skin
  • Moisturize heel skin once or twice a day
  • Exercise regularly
  • Avoid wearing uncomfortable shoes
  • Keep your shoes well padded
  • Keep your feet clean always


How can I treat cracked heels?

  • Soak feet every night for 15-20 minutes then pat dry and exfoliate with a pumice stone. Apply moisturizer, put on socks and leave overnight.
  • Spread mashed banana on your heels for 15 minutes, then wash away.
  • Make a foot soak of lemon juice, shampoo and vasoline in warm water. Soak for 20 minutes, then rinse and dry.
  • Make a paste of paraffin wax and mustard oil, apply to cracks and let sit over night (wear socks), then rinse in the morning.
  • Eat foods high in Vitamin E, Iron, Calcium, Omega-3’s, and Zinc as deficiencies in these can all cause skin problems like cracked heels.
