Insomnia is a type of sleep disorder in which people struggle to fall asleep and stay asleep. There are two types, primary and secondary insomnia. Primary insomnia is when someone has insomnia that is not associated with any other health condition. Secondary insomnia is insomnia caused by a primary health condition such as asthma, depression, cancer or pain. It can vary in how often it occurs and for how long it lasts. Insomnia is caused by symptoms, emotional or physical discomfort, environmental factors, medications, problems with your sleep schedules, depression, anxiety, chronic stress, pain or discomfort.

  •  Try to go to sleep at the same time every night and get up the same time every day

How can I treat insomnia?

  • Limit your caffeine or alcohol intake. Both can affect your sleep either by preventing you from sleeping or by waking you up in the middle of the night.
  • Have a small snack right before bed. It can act as a sedative and help you wake up a bit more clear-headed in the morning.
  • Take melatonin supplements. It can help you sleep.
  • Valerian is an herb that is not addictive and has been shown to help people sleep almost as well as a sleeping pill.
  • Do relaxation techniques!
  • Try aromatherapy with lavender which helps to soothe the body and sedate the mind.
