Get Rid of Snoring

Snoring is caused by the vibrating of tissues in your throat when they relax during sleep. The soft palate, tongue and throat may relax too much causing them to block the airways and knock against the throat making the sounds known as snoring. Your tonsils and adenoids may also vibrate and the tighter the airway the louder the sound.

How do I know if I am snoring?

  • Restless sleep
  • Sleeping with your mouth open
  • Fatigue
  • Your partner may notice snoring and inform you that you are snoring while you sleep

How can I prevent snoring?

  • Avoid drinking before bed
  • Avoid sleeping pills and tranquilizers as they slow your breathing and relax your body too much
  • Go to bed at the same time every night
  • Get plenty of rest
  • Sleep on your side not your back
  • Quit smoking
  • Raise your head 4-6 inches
  • Treat any breathing problems such as a head cold as quickly as possible

How can I treat snoring?

  • Lose weight. Being heavy increases the risk of blockage.
  • Give up smoking, smoking causes airway congestion and increases smoking.
  • Try a salt gargle, one teaspoon salt in a cup of warm water, frees the throat of impurities that may cause snoring.
  • Limit caffeine consumption.
  • Eat small meals over large ones. A large meal may increase the amount of weight pressing against the throat.
  • Use a humidifier to keep rooms moist. Dryness can increase snoring.
  • Get new pillows. Pillows fill up with allergens that can cause a stuffy nose and night time breathing problems.
