How to Get Rid of Hair Loss

Hair loss, also known as alopecia, is a condition in which hair falls out in various parts of the body, most noticeably the top of the head. Hair growth continues throughout our lives and slows as we age and cell production decreases. There are many types of alopecia, and controlling hair loss is important to having and improving self-esteem.


What type of hair loss do I have?

There are many types of hair loss or alopecia. They include:

  • Involutional: gradual thinning of the hair with age.
  • Androgenic: a genetic condition affecting both men and women that causes baldness beginning in the teens and early twenties or as late as the forties
  • Alopecia Areata: starts suddenly and causes patchy loss in children and young adults though 90% of those with the condition will regain their hair in a few years.
  • Alopecia universals: the loss of all the hair on the body including the eyebrows, eye lashes and even pubic hair.
  • Trichotillomania: a psychological disorder in which one pulls out their own hair.
  • Telogen effluvium: temporary thinning of the hair on the scalp.


How can I prevent hair loss?

There is no guaranteed way to prevent hair loss as doctors aren’t quite sure why hair loss occurs. However, they do know that there are certain links to hormones, genes, drugs, diseases and medical conditions that can cause hair loss, as well as stress, illness and even childbirth. Managing these health conditions to the best of your ability is the best way to prevent hair loss as a symptom of other diseases.


How can I treat hair loss?

  • Try treating your hair with saw palmetto. It helps to block DHT which can cause hair loss.
  • Take supplements with a bit of extra Vitamin A, Vitamin E, and the B vitamins. They all help with the production of hair and other cells.
  • Massage essential oils such as lavender or bay with an almond or sesame oil into your hair to stimulate growth.
  • Do a hot oil treatment to make your hair a bit healthier. Use safflower, canola or olive oils.
  • Brittle hair? Rub rangoli henna into your hair. It will strengthen the roots.
  • Enjoy high protein foods. They help to curb hair loss. But choose your meats carefully and avoid anything that is hormone treated.
