Cataracts are caused by a buildup of protein on the lens of the eye that causes clouding and impairs vision. Many Americans over the age of 65 suffer from cataracts. The most important way to prevent and treat cataracts is to make sure you have reguarly yearly eye exams. Though there are a number of factors involved in the creation of cataracts, you can also try some of these methods to prevent them.

  • Prevent the development of cataracts by eating a diet high in antioxidants as they prevent free radicals from building up.
  • Stop smoking! Smoking creates huge numbers of free radicals.
  • Keep your diabetes under control. Sugar in the bloodstream puts extra pressureon the lens.
  • Eat foods high in beta-carotene and other carotenoids to help battle free radicals. Flavonoids help to control them as well.

How can I treat cataracts?

  • Take glutathione, an antioxidant that decreases in the body as you age and helps to prevent damage to the lens.
  • Start taking a Vitamin C supplement regularly; it can decrease both the occurrence and severity of cataracts.
  • Take Vitamin E, it can get into the lens and help Vitamin C work.
  • Make a paste of Pascalite, a bentonite clay, and place it on your eyelids, then drip some water on it and let it filter into eyes. The minerals are reported to help with cataracts.
  • Dusty Miller or Cineraria maritima can be used to dissolve the cataracts. The tincture should be diluted in saline water and applied to the eyes.
