Soothe Sensitive Teeth Naturally

Sensitive teeth can sneak up on you when you least expect them and can leave you dreading the next sip of cool water without a straw or the next bite of sugary cake. Previously enjoyable activities become moments of trepidation as you wait for the sharp, shooting pain to arc through your teeth. Sensitive teeth can be caused by everything from a dental cleaning, to bruised teeth, to receding gums and worn away enamel. If they persist you should seek dental care as they can also be a sign of serious dental conditions that may require procedures such as a root canal.


How do I know if I have sensitive teeth?

  • Pain when eating hot, cold, sweet or sour foods.
  • Pain when breathing through the mouth.
  • Pain when drinking cold or hot drinks.


How do I prevent sensitive teeth?

  • Avoid highly acidic foods such as red wine, fruit juices, and pickles. They wear away the enamel away.
  • Work at relaxing and eliminating teeth grinding habits.
  • Treat conditions like a receding gum line.


How can I treat sensitive teeth?

  • Gargle salt water, a teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water, every night to help rid your mouth of bacteria.
  • Rinse your mouth with a baking soda wash, a 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda in a cup of water. Rinse, then spit out.
  • Give your gums a massage with aloe vera gel. It will help to reduce inflammation and bring down sensitivity.
  • Clove oil is known to help relieve pain. Rub on gums and teeth to help eliminate sensitivity.
  • Mix together a tablespoon of mustard oil with a teaspoon of rock salt and gently massage into your teeth. Leave for five minutes to help reduce inflammation and decrease sensitivity, then rinse and spit out.
  • Change your toothbrush to one with soft bristles.
  • Brush after consuming acidic, sugary and starchy foods, but wait at least 20 minutes before doing so.
  • Sugarless gum can be chewed to help clean the mouth and strengthen the teeth.
