Treat Clinical Depression Naturally

Treatment for Clinical Depression

Clinical depression is different from seasonal depression or mild depression. Clinical depression lasts more than a couple weeks and becomes pointed and intense. It comes in two forms, minor and major. Major depression is disabling and can last for weeks or months. Dysthymia or minor depression isn’t quite as debilitating but is more like living in a constantly dreary day. Activities that once brought you joy barely rouse your enthusiasm.

The causes of clinical depression are not completely known but there are both physical, chemical and environmental elements to it. Coping with depression requires patience both on the part of the person suffering from the disease and those around them.

How do I prevent Clinical Depression?

You cannot prevent clinical depression. Clinical depression and major depressive disorder are not your fault. You cannot stop them from happening. Depression in men and women is caused by an imbalance of chemicals in the brain and is often brought on by stressful events in a persons life such as:

  • Job Loss
  • Divorce or Separation
  • Perceived major failures
  • Death or illness
  • Abuse

Seek help immediately if you have thoughts of suicide or thoughts of harming yourself.

What are the symptoms of Clinical Depression?

  • Irritability
  • Anxiety
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Fatigue
  • Feelings of hopelessness and helplessness
  • Feelings of worthlessness, guilt and self-hate
  • Isolation
  • Loss of interest in activities once enjoyed
  • Insomnia
  • Over sleeping
  • Dramatic changes in appetite
  • Suicidal thoughts or behaviors.

How Do I get rid of Clinical Depression?

  • Build a routine. Routines help to rebuild structure which is important in helping to control depression.
  • Set goals that you can easily reach. Make sure that they are reasonable. Setting goals you cannot reasonably achieve will worsen your depression, but reasonable, daily goals will help you feel as though you can achieve success and defeat your depression.
  • Exercising regularly helps to fight off depression because it releases ‘feel good’ chemicals known as endorphins.
  • Foods with omega-3 fatty acids and folic acid may help to reduce depression, so try increasing your intake of these foods. Coconut oil and foods with tryptophan such as turkey can help as well.
  • Make sure you eat reasonable amounts of food and maintain a healthy diet. Weight gain often helps to push people back into depression.
  • Get plenty of sleep. Depression sufferers can sometimes suffer from insomnia which simply makes the depression worse.
  • Learn positive self-talk techniques to help fight off the negative self talk that often occurs when suffering from a serious bout of depression.
  • Try something different. Often times depression can spike because we become stuck in a rut. Fight off a spike in clinical depression by getting out and doing something different!
  • Never skip meals. Even though it’s common to gain weight while depressed, skipping meals just makes things worse because blood sugar drops making it more difficult to cope with negative feelings.
  • Avoid caffeine.
  • Get some sun! Vitamin D is crucial to helping us feel good and keep a positive attitude.
  • If you are not on medication for your depression consider trying St. John’s Wort, 5-HTP, SAMe, L-Theanine and fish oil. They help to fight off depression and anxiety. Only try one at a time, however, and keep note of any changes in mood. Stop if moods worsen.
  • Meditation is a great way to get your mind back into a positive mood.
  • Find someone to talk to. It doesn’t have to be a licensed therapist or psychologist, sometimes just talking with a friend helps to boost mood.
  • Increase your magnesium intake. It helps boost energy which, in turn, helps to improve mood.
