Gastroparesis is a chronic, long-lasting illness that quite literally means paralyzed stomach. It is caused by problems with the nerves and muscles that help to control the emptying of the stomach. If these nerves and muscles are damaged, they will not work properly and the whole process of digestion is slowed. One of the most common causes of gastroparesis is poorly controlled diabetes which is often made even worse by the problems digesting.
