Glaucoma is a disease that affects the optic nerve which carries information from the eye to the brain. If this nerve is damaged you could lose your vision. There are three main types of glaucoma: open angle which slowly leads to loss of eyesight, closed-angle which the iris and lens clock fluid movement causing high pressure. This often requires immediate medical attention. The last is congenital glaucoma which is found in infants at birth.

  • Sudden, severe blurring of vision

  • Colored halos around lights
  • Redness of the eye

  • Vomiting
  • Watery eyes
  • Eyes that look cloudy
  • Eyes that look abnormally large
  • Rubbing, squinting or keeping the eyes closed


How do I prevent glaucoma?

Most risk factors cannot be prevented because they are things like age, race and family history. Have an eye exam yearly and be tested for glaucoma every 5-10 years if you are under 40 and do not have a family history of glaucoma.


How can I treat glaucoma?

  • Eat foods high in lutein and zeaxathin, antioxidants that help to heal the eyes.
  • Increase your vitamins C, E and A, they are all eye-healthy vitamins.
  • Zinc is a mineral that has been found to help keep eyes healthy.
  • Gingko biloba has been shown to help with symptoms.
  • Bilberry has been used to support vision.
  • Avoid anything that would increase pressure such as smoking, alcohol and caffeine.
  • Make fennel tea eyedrops diluted with sterile water and use three drops three times a day.
