Gout is a type of arthritis that brings sudden, burning pain, stiffness and swelling into the joints; most often the big toe. It is most common in men, and if left untreated can harm joints, tendons and other tissues. It is caused by too much uric acid in the blood causing hard crystals to form in your joints.

  • Warmth, pain and swelling in a joint.
  • Pain that starts at night and is incredibly intense
  • Rapid increase in discomfort that lasts during the night then eases in the morning
  • Peeling, itchy skin around the affected joint
  • Red or purplish skin around the affected joint
  • Limited range of motion


How can I prevent gout?
Gout is caused by years of build up from uric acid in the blood. Prevention of gout and flare ups is simple.

  • Lose weight.
  • Stop alcohol intake.
  • Drink lots of water.
  • Eat low-fat dairy products.
  • Avoid foods like meat, seafood and beer; they are high in purines.


How can I treat gout?

  • Keep your weight under control to limit strain on your joints.
  • Keep yourself well hydrated, this will help to flush the uric acid out of your system.
  • Keep the joint immobilized and elevated to help reduce inflammation.
  • Do not ice or heat the gout.
  • Drink a tea made of 1/2 teaspoon devil’s claw root in a cup of boiling water and steeped for ten minutes to help control pain.
  • Enjoy apple preserves. They help to neutralize uric acid.
  • Cherries help remove toxins, so if you’re suffering from a flare up enjoy some cherries.
  • Chicory in a tea or a poultice has been used to cure gout for centuries.
  • Try a mustard poultice. Make a 1/1 mix of dried mustard and flour, then mix with enough water to make a paste, spread on the join and leave.
