When the folds of your nails become inflamed this is called paronychia. It is most often caused by infections, irritations and injuries and is significantly more common in women than in men. The area gets warm and tender then may fill with pus. If it doesn’t heal up on its own with natural treatments you may need to have it drained by a doctor. If the infection isn’t cleared up it can become chronic and nearly impossible to completely free yourself of.


How do I know if I have paronychia?

  • Redness around the nail
  • Swelling around the nail
  • Sore to the touch
  • Mild to severe pain
  • Yellow-green color under the skin
  • Pus-y discharge


How do I prevent paronychia?

  • Keep hands and feet dry and clean.
  • Wear rubber gloves with a cotton lining if you are using harsh chemicals such as bleach regularly.
  • Be gentle when you manicure your nails.
  • Avoid biting your nails.
  • Keep your hands and feet well manicured and healthy if you’re diabetic.


How can I treat paronychia?

  • Soak the affected finger or toe in a 50/50 mixture of water and soap three time a day.
  • Apply hydrogen peroxide to the nail to prevent further infection.
  • Soak in a 50/50 mix of apple cider and water for 15-20 minutes.
  • Moisturize the nail with a little bit of olive oil and oregano oil to fight of fungal infections.
  • You can do a soak of epsom salts and water to help draw out the infection.
